Comida en casa, planned out for you

Letter from the Editor

Is it a Latina rite of passage to grow up hearing your mom tell you “hay Comida en casa”? And then to hit adulthood, start seeing the prices of some of these foods you were asking for and realize yes … there really is comida en casa.

Nothing made me realize I was entering my señora era more than when I kept reminding myself to eat the beans I had at home (even more than actually getting married).

So basically, it turns out our moms were right. It makes you wonder what other wisdom they were passing down to us with those plates of rice and beans.

That’s what this issue is all about … not just getting more comfortable cooking food at home, but embracing the lessons these home cooking traditions pass down to us about nutrition, community, and well-being.

In addition to a huge variety of recipes, we’ve got meditations on the practice of sobremesa and reflections on how our families used flexibility and resourcefulness to get food on the table.

As you read through this issue, I hope it inspires you not just to make your food at home, but to reflect on what lessons you absorbed by the way your family approached meal time.

Con cariño,
Krista
